2002 Scholarship Award Winners

by Tonya Klemm, Scholarship Chairperson

John Agnifili Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship is awarded to Orange County Seniors.  Students with a grade point average (GPA) higher than 4.0 have taken college credit courses in high school.

1st Place

Ashley Smith stands 6'0".  She attends Esperanza High School where she has a 4.64 GPA.  She will be attending UC Berkeley in the fall majoring in Political Science and English.  Her goal is international politics.  We're glad she's on our side.

In her spare time, which we can't find any, she works at Best Buy and is in the Marching Band, Varsity Basketball, Varsity Track, National Honor Society (committee chairperson), Drama Club, and Senior Class Treasurer.

She humbles us all with her charity work.  She is 2001 President of National Charity League, Yorba Linda Library Volunteer, IMMEX/UCLA web site designer, Meal on Wheels, MADD, American Diabetes Assn, Red Cross, and Women's Transitional Center, and that's not the entire list.

Ashley says "Being tall has not always been easy, but for me, it has measured out a successful future.  My size has given me a stronger body, a stronger mind, stronger skills and so strong a spirit.  Being tall is powerful.  Being tall is beautiful.  Being tall is the only way I would ever want to be."

2nd Place

Kimberly Wilson stands 5'11" tall. She attends El Toro High School where she has a GPA of 4.69.  She will be attending Yale or Stanford (not decided at this point) where she will be majoring in civil or industrial engineering.  She plans to become an engineer for a large company.

Her activities include Varsity Volleyball, CA Scholarship Federation, Red Cross Club, National Honor Society, Peer Tutor, Kiwanis Club, California Girls State, and baby-sits.

Kim says "You must use what you are given in life, whether it be physical, mental, or material, to improve the lives of those around you.  My height has molded my personality and my character.  It has given me strength.  It has given me independence.  It has enabled me to stand tall as a proud and confident individual."

3rd Place

Chris Carpenter is all of 6'5" tall and attends Corona Del Mar High School.  He will be attending University of Montana in the fall where he will be studying wildlife biology (he should just attend our club functions).  His goal is to become a high school biology teacher.

Among Chris's school activities are Honors Choir, Latin Club, Fish Club, Barbershop Quartet, Cross Country, Track, Boy's State representative, and Rotary Club's American Sister-City Ambassador to Japan.  In his spare time he has achieved Eagle Scout and does photography and backpacking.

Chris writes "My height has made me the strong, outgoing leader that I am and caused me to meet and inflence more people than otherwise possible."

Jane Bates-Rehder Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship is awarded to a TCOC member or an immediate family member.

Kristen Garubba is the daughter of our own Gayle Swain.  Kristen attends Orange Coast College where she majors in elementary education.  She plans on earning her BA and Teaching Credential to teach elementary education.

Kristen has been around this club since she was very young and had attended many events, even helping putting them on.  In Kristen's words "To me, the Tall Club is a wonderful organization in everything they do and every activity they plan. To sum up what the club means to me, I would have to say that even though I am not a member, I am grateful every day that it exists and my mom can be happy and have friends who are honest and care about her the way I do." I guess that sums it all up.

Tony Wince Memorial Scholarship

Aaron Nichols stands 6'3" tall and attends Orange High School where he has earned a 4.83 GPA, the highest of all our applicants.  He will be attending UCLA in the fall majoring in Chemistry.  His goal is to become a pediatrician.

In his free time he belongs to the Science Club (Treasurer), Math Club (Treasurer), California Scholarship Federation, National Honor Society, Model United Nations, Mock Trial (Co-Captain), Academic Decathlon, Chess Club, Interact, ASB Commissioner of Academics, and the Speech Team.  And in his spare, spare time he works with the homeless, makes care baskets for St. Joseph's, groomed yards for the elderly, raised money for Leukemia Society and Dare, worked on canned food drives, community cleanup and blood drives.  Whew!

And, like Tony Wince, Aaron is a kind and gentle human being.

"My height has helped form my personality and even the manner I treat others with. I will use the lessons I have learned to better myself and effect a positive change on the world around me."
